Dewi Sant was a Celtic monk who lived in the 6th Century. He lived a hard and frugal life, eating mostly simple food like bread and herbs and drinking only water. During his life he helped spread Christianity to the pagan Celtic tribes and reached the status of archbishop of Wales before his death on 1 March 589AD. He is buried at St David’s Catherdral here in Pembrokeshire – a great place of pilgrimage.

Today in Wales, part of our celebration of St Davids Day is enjoying suppers of simple food-warming Welsh cawl, wholesome rustic bread, barabrith and Welsh cakes.

The wearing of our national emblems, the daffodil and the leek is important too. The leek was used in a 16th century battle when it was suggested the Welsh soldiers wore leeks in their caps to distinguish them from their Saxon opponents. A good idea and they won the battle of Heathfield!
